Wyllie's Farm

East Lothian, Scotland

Ruchlaw Farm, East Lothian

Father and son pig farmers, James and Jamie Wyllie (J&J Wyllie) saw diversification through wind energy as an attractive investment for their agricultural business.

The family business farms over 2,700 sows and 1,000 ewes at Ruchlaw and two additional units in Berwickshire and Lanarkshire.

Following Jamie’s studies in ‘Agriculture and Business Management’ at the University of Reading, he brought new found skills home to the family farm in Scotland. He recognised the potential of wind energy as an attractive investment for the family business.

The electricity from the 275kW Vergnet turbine powers the pig unit enabling J&J Wyllie to control their energy costs and make costs savings, with excess power being fed into the grid.

Jamie keeps a track on how much energy the Vergnet turbine produces using his mobile phone. Vergnet’s remote supervision allows monitoring and control of the turbine from anywhere, with any computer.

Benefitting from the Feed‐in Tariff

Launched in 2010 by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the UK Government Feed‐In Tariffs (FIT) scheme supports energy production from renewable energy sources. It is a particularly attractive incentive for farmers, businesses and investors installing medium size wind energy projects.

Why Vergnet & the GEV MP R Wind Turbine

Working with ICE Renewables, a medium wind development company based in North Yorkshire, J&J Wyllie of Ruchlaw Farm chose a

Vergnet GEV MP-R 275kW, 32m hub height wind turbine.

They selected this model for its high performing production yields and the turnkey package proposed by Vergnet and ICE Renewables.

Vergnet wind turbines have one of the highest production yields in the medium wind industry supported by a dedicated local UK O&M service and full service package.

This combination of top level service and technological performance delivers a very robust IRR (Internal Rate of Return) and makes its turbines one of the most attractive medium wind investments.
